QuestionAnswer
What are the two main types of cells found in the nervous system? Neurons and glial (glia) cells
What is the main function of a neuron? A neuron transmits electrical (and chemical) signals to communicate with other cells.
Neuron A specialized cell of the nervous system that has a cell body, dendrites, and often a long axon, and transmits nerve impulses to send information throughout the body.
Glial cell (Glia) Non-neuronal support cells in the nervous system that provide support, nutrition, protection, and insulation for neurons; they help maintain a healthy environment for neurons and sometimes wrap axons in myelin
What parts make up the Central Nervous System (CNS)? The CNS is made up of the brain and the spinal cord
What is the role of the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)? The PNS connects the CNS to the rest of the body — it sends sensory information to the CNS and carries signals from the CNS to muscles, organs, and glands
Central Nervous System (CNS) The division of the nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord, which processes information and acts as the body’s command center.
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) A subdivision of the PNS that controls involuntary functions such as heartbeat, digestion, breathing — basically, body processes that happen automatically without conscious effort
What is the main job of the heart? The heart pumps blood through the body’s blood vessels, sending oxygen and nutrients to tissues and carrying away waste.
What are two main things that blood delivers to the body’s cells? Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cells
Heart A muscular organ that works like a pump — it pushes blood through a network of blood vessels so blood can reach all parts of the body.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
