| Neurons | Excitable cells that conduct the impulses that make possible all nervous system functions |
| Oligodendrocytes | Smaller than astrocytes and have fewer processes |
| Hypothalamus | Consists of several structures that lie beneath the thalamus and form the floor of the third ventricle and the lower part of its lateral walls |
| Cerebrum | The largest and uppermost division of the brain, consists of two halves the right and left cerebral hemispheres |
| Autonomic nervous system (ANS) | A subdivision of the nervous system that regulates involuntary effectors |
| Enteric nervous system (ENS) | A special part of the ANS |
| Central nervous system (CNS) | The structural and functional center of the entire nervous system |
| Peripheral nervous system (PNS) | Consists of the nerve tissues that lie in the periphery, or "outer regions," of the nervous system |
| Monocytes | The largest of the leukocytes |
| Basophils | Have relatively large, but sparse, cytoplasmic granules that stain a dark pur-ple with basic dyes. |
