Neuron based nerve cell that sends and receives electrical signals
Axon Long fiber that carries impulses aways from the neuron's cell body
Synapse Gap where neurotransmitters allow neurons to communicate
CNS (Central Nerve System ) Brain and spinal cord; processes and integrates information
PNS (Peripheral Nervous System) All nerves outside CNS that connect the body to the brain
ANS (Automatic Nervous System) Controls involuntary actions like heat rate and digestion
Sympathetic Division Fight-or-flight response; increases alertness and body activity
Parasympathetic Division Rest-and-digest response; conserves energy
Photorecptors light detecting cells in he retina
Hormone Chemical messenger released into the bloodstream to regulate functions
Pituitary Gland Master endocrine gland that directs other glands
Atria Upper heart chambers that receive blood
Ventricles Lower heart chambers that pump blood out.
RBCs (Red Blood Cells) Carry oxygen throughout the body
Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
Veins Blood Vessels that return blood to the heart
Lymph Nodes Filter lymph and house immune cells
Antigen Any substance the immune system identifies as foreign
Alveoli Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs
Deltoid Major shoulder muscle that abducts the arm
