| Upper respiratory tract | Nose, nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx, and larynx |
| Lower respiratory tract | Lungs, trachea, and all segments of the bronchial tree |
| Septum | midline partition that separates hollow nasal cavity |
| Pharynx | Throat |
| nasopharynx | behind nose and extends from the posterior nares to the level of the soft palate |
| Oropharynx | behind the mouth from the soft palate above to the level of the hyoid bone below |
| Laryngopharynx | Extends from the hyoid bone to the esophagus |
| Pharyngeal tonsils | Located in the nasopharynx on its posterior wall opposite the posterior nares aka adenoids when they are enlarged |
| Larynx | voice box; lies between root of tongue and upper end of trachea |
| Epiglottis | Small leaf shaped cartilage that projects upward behind the tongue and hyoid bone |
| Trachea | Windpipe; 11 cm tube; extends from larynx in neck to primary bronchi in thoracic cavity; diameter is 2.5 cm |
| Respiratory membrane | Barrier across which gases are exchanged between alveolar air and blood |
| Surfactant | Helps reduce surface tension |
