How do kidneys regulate acid base balance? By secreting hydrogen ions and reabsorption bicarbonate
How does bile aid fat digestion? It emulsifies fats to increase surface area for lipase activity
What role does the pancreas play in digestion? Release enzymes that break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates
How does the small intestine maximize absorption? Through villi, microvilli, and extensive capillary networks
What stimulates increase breathing during exercise? Rising CO2 levels and hydrogen ions concentration stimulate central chemoreceptors
What happen to gas exchange when alveoli lose surface area? Diffusion efficiency decreases, reducing blood oxygenation
How is most carbon dioxide transported? As bicarbonate ions formed in red blood cells
What drives inhalation? Diaphragm contraction lowers thoracic pressure, drawing air in
How does insulin lower blood glucose? It increases cellular uptake and promotes glycogen formation
How does negative feedback maintain hormone balance? Rising hormone levels inhibit further hormone release
How does lymph flow move without a pump? Skeletal muscle contraction, breathing movements and one way waves
What is the primary function of neutrophils? Rapid phagocytosis of bacteria
Why is erythopoietin secretion increased during hypoxia? low oxygen stimulates kidney to produce EPO to raise RBC production
How does the SA nodes initiate the heartbeat? Through spontaneous depolarization caused by slow inward sodium leakage
