| Stratum corneum | Several layers of flake-like dead cells mostly made up of dense networks of keratin fibers |
| Papillary layer | Loose fibrous tissue with collagenous and elastic fibers; forms nipplelike bumps (papillae) |
| Jaundice | yellowish discoloration of the skin and other tissues by bile pigments |
| Desquamation | Shedding of epithelial microbial cells from the skin surface |
| Long bones | identified by their roughly cylindrical shape that is longer than is wide |
| Short bones | Cube or box shaped structures that are about as broad as they are long |
| Epiphyses | Proximal and distal ends of a long bone |
| Lacunae | small spaces in bone matrix that contain tissue fluid |
| Canaliculi | ultra small canals that radiate in all directions from the lacunae and connect them to one another and to a larger canal, the central canal |
| Transverse canals | Communicating canals contain nerves and vessels that carry blood and lymph from from the exterior surface of the bone to the osteons |
