| descriptive | providing a detailed picture of something using words (think of adjectives describing words) |
| outstretched | stretched out or extended as far as possible |
| rhyme | repetition of identical or similar sounds at the ends of words (cat, hat, bed, head, etc.) |
| simile | comparing two things using "like" or "as" (Her smile was AS bright AS the sun., He runs LIKE a cheetah.) |
| metaphor | comparing two things saying one IS the other (not using like or as, Her smile IS sunshine. He IS a night owl.) |
| meter | type of sound structure; involves rhythm, syllables (words), often measured in units called feet (length) |
| alliteration | same letter or sound is repeated in closely placed words (ex. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers) |
| theme | the message or lesson the author wants you to take away from the story |
| lyric poetry | expresses personal thoughts and feelings; has a musical quality or sound; often has end rhymes and a consistent, or regular, meter |
| haiku | uses three short lines to describe a scene or moment; first and last line of five syllables an da second line of 7 syllables |
| assonance | repetition of vowel sounds in two or more words, such as row and bone; can be used to emphasize or connect ideas |
