1. Question: What is the generalized function of the digestive system? Answer: To break down food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste products.
2. Question: What are the four layers of the GI tract wall (inner to outer)? Answer: Mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and serosa (or adventitia).
3. Term: Accessory Organs of Digestion Definition: Teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
4. Term: Gastrointestinal (GI) Tract Definition: A continuous tube from mouth to anus, including mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.
5. Question: What is a major modification of the small intestine wall that increases absorption? Answer: Villi and microvilli.
6. Question: What are the three major salivary glands? Answer: Parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands.
7. Question: What are the three divisions of the pharynx? Answer: Nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx.
8. Term: Esophagus Definition: A muscular tube that connects the pharynx to the stomach; lined with stratified squamous epithelium.
9. Question: What are the two main stomach sphincters? Answer: Lower esophageal (cardiac) sphincter and pyloric sphincter.
10. Question: What are the main divisions of the small intestine? Answer: Duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
11. Term: Peritoneum Definition: A serous membrane lining the abdominal cavity and covering abdominal organs.
