Week 11 Lymphatic and Immune Systems

QuestionAnswer
What is the main function of the lymphatic system? To return excess interstitial fluid to the bloodstream and help defend the body against pathogens.
What are lymph nodes responsible for? Filtering lymph and housing immune cells like lymphocytes and macrophages that destroy pathogens.
What is the spleen’s main function in immunity? It filters blood, removes old red blood cells, and activates immune responses.
What is lymph? A clear fluid that contains water, proteins, and immune cells, transported through the lymphatic vessels.
What are T cells? White blood cells that manage immune responses and destroy infected or abnormal cells.
What are B cells? Lymphocytes that produce antibodies to target and neutralize pathogens.
What does the thymus do? It allows T cells to mature and become immunocompetent functional.
What is innate immunity? The body’s first line of non-specific defense, including skin, inflammation, and macrophages.
What is adaptive immunity? A specific immune response that creates memory cells and becomes stronger after each exposure.
What is an antigen? A foreign molecule like bacteria, virus proteins, or toxins.
