QuestionAnswer
What are the two main divisions of the muscular system? Axial muscles (support and position the axial skeleton) and appendicular muscles (support and move the limbs).
What is the primary function of the axial muscles? To support and move the head, neck, and trunk, and assist in breathing.
What is the primary function of the appendicular muscles? To move and stabilize the pectoral and pelvic girdles and limbs.
What is a motor unit? A single motor neuron and all the muscle fibers it controls.
What is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system? The neuron.
What are neuroglia (glial cells)? Supporting cells that protect, nourish, and maintain neurons.
What are the main parts of the central nervous system (CNS)? The brain and spinal cord.
What are the main parts of the peripheral nervous system (PNS)? Cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and peripheral nerves connecting the CNS to the body.
What does the autonomic nervous system (ANS) control? Involuntary functions such as heart rate, digestion, and glandular activity.
What are the two divisions of the autonomic nervous system? Sympathetic (“fight or flight”) and parasympathetic (“rest and digest”).
