QuestionAnswer
is the transfer of information and common understanding from one person to another. Communication
is derived from COMMUNIS, a Latin word which means to make something common or to share. This process highlights the transmission of meaning, ideas, and feelings. Communication
Nature of Communication It is a process, it happens between one/more people, can be verbal or nonverbal
Elements of Communication Speaker, Message, Encoding, Channel, Decoding, Receiver, Feedback, Context, & Noise
Source of information or message. Speaker
The information, ideas, or thoughts conveyed by the speaker in words or in actions. Message
The process of converting the message into words, actions, or other forms that the speaker understands. Encoding
The medium or the means, such as personal or non-personal, verbal or nonverbal, in which the encoded message is conveyed. Channel
The process of interpreting the encoded message of the speaker by the receiver. Decoding
The recipient of the message, or someone who decodes the message. Receiver
The reactions, responses, or information provided by the receiver. Feedback
The environment where communication takes place. Context
The factors that affect the flow of communication. Also called interference, anything that blocks the communication process. Noise
Functions of Communication Regulation/Control, Social Interaction, Motivation, Information Dissemination, & Emotional Expression
It can regulate and control human behavior, influencing the nature and number of activities in which individuals engage. Regulation/Control
It can be used to produce social interaction. In their daily course of living, human beings develop and maintain bonds, intimacy, relations, and associations. Social Interaction
A function of communication used to motivate or to encourage people to live better. Motivation
It can be used for giving and getting information. Information Dissemination
It is used to facilitate people’s expression of their feelings and emotions. Emotional Expression
Types of Communication Verbal & Nonverbal Communication
3 General Types of Communication Models Linear, Interactive, & Transactional
It is the primary communication model, a one-way interaction where feedback is not present. The sender communicates with the receiver without receiving feedback. Linear
Considered as the “mother of all communication models.” It is the first model to highlight the role of noise. Shannon-Weaver Model
