What is physical fitness? A state of health and well-being that allows a person to carry out tasks without fatigue and meet activity demands.
What does fitness depend on? The person’s environment and the activities they need to perform.
Why is fitness important for health? It helps carry out everyday tasks and reduces risk of lifestyle diseases.
What is sport-specific fitness? Fitness required for a particular sport; being fit for one sport doesn't guarantee fitness for another.
Cardiorespiratory endurance definition Ability of the heart and lungs to work for long periods and supply oxygen to the muscles.
Example sports for cardiorespiratory endurance Marathon running, cycling, triathlon.
Muscular endurance definition Ability of muscles to repeatedly contract without fatigue.
Example sports for muscular endurance Rowing, swimming, cycling.
Muscular strength definition Maximum force a muscle can exert in a single contraction.
Example sports for muscular strength Weightlifting, rugby, shot put.
Flexibility definition Range of motion around a joint.
Example sports for flexibility Gymnastics, dance, martial arts.
Body composition definition Ratio of fat mass to fat-free mass (muscle, bone, organs).
Why body composition matters Different sports require different body types (e.g., rugby vs gymnastics).
Agility definition Ability to move and change direction quickly while maintaining control.
Example sports using agility Football, rugby, netball.
Balance definition Ability to maintain equilibrium either stationary or moving.
Example sports using balance Gymnastics, surfing, skiing.
Coordination definition Ability for different body parts to work smoothly and efficiently together.
Example sports using coordination Tennis, cricket, basketball.
Power definition Strength × speed; ability to exert force quickly.
Example sports using power Shot put, sprinting, long jump.
Reaction time definition Time taken to respond to a stimulus.
Example sports using reaction time Boxing, goalkeeping, sprint start.
Speed definition Ability to move quickly across the ground or through movement of limbs.
Example sports using speed Sprinting, hockey, football.
Why do different sports require different fitness components? Because each sport has different movements, intensity levels, durations, and skill demands.
Examples of fitness needs: gymnast Needs flexibility, coordination, balance, strength, power.
Examples of fitness needs: sprinter Needs speed, power, reaction time, strength, good body composition.
Why test fitness? To identify strengths/weaknesses, monitor progress, set goals, and guide training.
What is a fitness test battery? A group of tests designed to measure fitness components needed for a specific activity.
