What is the difference between a twitch contraction and a tetanic contraction? Twitch contraction is a short muscle contraction from one signal whereas tetanic contraction is a long muscle contraction caused by many signals in a row.
Compare somatic nervous system and automatic nervous system. SNS controls voluntary movements in the body whereas ANS controls involuntary movements like breathing/heartbeat.
What are the functions of the thalamus and hypothalamus? Thalamus sends sensory information to the right side of the brain and hypothalamus controls things like hunger, temperature, and sleep.
Name the six receptor categories and their senses. Mechanoreceptors: sense pressure and touch Chemoreceptors: sense taste and smell Thermoreceptors: sense temperature Nociceptors: sense pain Photoceptors: sense light (eyes) Osmoceptors: sense body fluids
What are the different tongue papillae and what do they do? Fungiform: large, mushroom shaped bumps, few taste buds Circumvallate: huge, dome shaped bumps, back of the tongue, thousands of taste buds Foliate: red, leaflike ridges on the sides of the tongue, hundred or so taste buds Filiform: feel food texture
Name the two hormones of the neurohypophysis. Oxytocin and ADH (antidiuretic hormone)
What factors influence blood volume? Water, hormones, salt, and blood loss.
What are the three main types of blood vessels and what do they do? Artery: carry blood away from the heart Vein: carry blood toward the heart Capillary: tiny vessels where exchange happens
What are two functions of the lymph nodes? Defense and hemotopoiesis.
What is the difference between active and passive immunity? Active immunity is when your body makes the antibodies. Passive immunity is when you get antibodies from someone else.
What are some indicators of stress? Increase of blood pressure, heartbeat, sweaty palms, and dilation of pupils.
What is the upper and lower respiratory tract composed of? Upper: nose, nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx, and larynx Lower: trachea, all segments of the bronchial tree, and lungs
