TermDefinition
What is posture? A major role of muscles. The body alignment that favors function by keeping the body's center of gravity over its base.
What is the life cycle of the muscular system Muscle cells increase or decrease in number, size, and ability to shorten. developmental stages change muscular system. Degenerative changes due to age.
Difference between cardiac and smooth muscle tissue? Cardiac muscles are found in the heart. Contracts rhythmically and at a continuous to provide pumping. It contains parallel myofibrils, syncytium and the T tubules are larger. Smooth muscles are small tapered cells with a single nuclei and no T-tubules.
What is the CNS The central nervous system is the structural and functional center of the entire nervous system. It consists of the brain and spinal cord. Uses sensory info to evaluate and initiate a response.
What is the PNS The peripheral nervous system consists of the outer regions of the nervous system. This is cranial nerves from the brain and spinal nerves from the spinal cord.
Two divisions of the nervous system Afferent division consists of all incoming sensory pathways and Efferent division consist of all outgoing motor pathways.
Somatic nervous system The SNS role is to carry information to the somatic effectors like skeletal muscles. It also carries feedback information to the somatic integration centers in the CNS
Autonomic nervous system This is the efferent division carrying information to autonomic or visceral effectors like smooth and cardiac muscles, glands, and tissue.
What are 5 major types of Glia Astrocytes in the CNS (star shaped and largest) connect as cell extensions like neurons and capillaries. Microglia are small stationary cells. Ependymal cells form thin sheets that line fluid filled cavities. Oligodendrocytes hold nerve fibers together.
What are the major endocrine glands Pituitary gland, Pineal gland, Thyroid, Parathyroid, Adrenal, pancreatic islets, Gonads, Placenta, Thymus,.
