Anatomy Week 6-12

TermDefinition
1. Anterior Lobe Located base of the brain, below the hypothalamus and secretes growth hormones.
2. Diaphragm Prime mover of inhalation, when it contracts it flattens and increases volume in the thoracic cavity (allows air to enter lungs)
3. Pineal Small pinecone-shaped gland located deep in the brain and secretes melatonin.
4. Four pairs of muscles External oblique, internal oblique, transverses abdominis, and rectus abdominis muscles
5. Posterior Lobe Located base of the brain, stores and releases hormones that are produced by the hypothalamus, secretes hormones like ADH and ocutocin.
6. Two parts of the autonomic nervous system Sympathetic (flight or fight response) and parasympathetic (rest and digest functions).
7. Parathyroid Four small glands located on the posterior surface of the thyroid and secretes PTH.
8. Stroke (signs/symptoms) F.A.S.T.: F-face (sudden drooping r numbness), A- Arms( weakness or numbness in one arm), S- Speech (slurred speech), T- Time (time to call 911).
9. Thyroid Butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck below the larynx, secretes T4 and T3.
10. Type 1 Diabetes Autoimmune condition, body's immune system attack and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
11. Adrenals Sits on top of each kidney and each gland has two parts; adrenal cortex and adrenal medulla.
12. Gestational Diabetes Develops during pregnancy and usually resolves after birth.
13. Adrenal medulla One part of the adrenal gland, secretes cortisol, aldosterone, and androgens.
14. Type 2 Diabetes Occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough of it.
15. Adrenal cortex One part of the adrenal gland, secretes epinephrine and norephinephrine.
