What is the main functional unit of the nervous system? The neuron, which transmits electrical and chemical signals.
What are the two main divisions of the nervous system? Central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS).
What is the role of the myelin sheath? It insulates axons and speeds up nerve signal transmission.
Name the five primary senses. Sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch.
Which endocrine gland produces insulin? The pancreas.
What hormone is released by the adrenal glands during stress? Adrenaline (epinephrine).
What are the two upper chambers of the heart called? The right and left atria.
What are the two lower chambers of the heart called? The right and left ventricles.
What is the primary function of red blood cells? To carry oxygen from the lungs to the body and carbon dioxide back to the lungs.
What is the difference between arteries and veins? Arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins carry blood to the heart.
Which part of the respiratory system is responsible for gas exchange? The alveoli.
What is the main muscle used in inhalation? The diaphragm.
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system in heart rate regulation? The sympathetic division increases heart rate, the parasympathetic division decreases it.
How do sensory receptors in the skin send information to the brain? Afferent neurons carry signals from the sensory receptors to the CNS.
What is the role of the hypothalamus in the endocrine system? It links the nervous system and endocrine system, controlling hormone release from the pituitary gland.
