Duodenum Definition: First section of the small intestine; receives bile and pancreatic enzymes
Small intestine Definition: Longest digestive organ; site of most nutrient absorption
Jejunum Definition: Middle portion of the small intestine where significant absorption occurs.
Cecum Definition: First part of the large intestine; connects ileum to colon
Pancreas Definition: Produces digestive enzymes and bicarbonate; endocrine and exocrine functions.
Mesentery Definition: Peritoneal fold that anchors intestines and supplies blood vessels.
Epiglottis Definition: Flap of cartilage that covers the trachea during swallowing to prevent choking.
Pleura Definition: Double-layer membrane surrounding the lungs, reducing friction
Rugae Definition: Folds in the stomach lining that allow expansion
Peristalsis Definition: Wave-like muscular contractions that move food through the digestive tract.
