QuestionAnswer
What is the main structural difference between the axial and appendicular skeletons? The axial skeleton includes the skull, vertebral column, and thoracic cage. The appendicular skeleton includes the limbs and shoulder/pelvic girdles.
What is the function of the myelin sheath in neurons? It insulates the axon and speeds up nerve impulse conduction through saltatory conduction.
What are dendrites and what do they do? Dendrites receive incoming signals from other neurons and carry them toward the cell body.
What is the difference between the CNS and PNS? CNS: brain and spinal cord for integration. PNS: all nerves outside CNS for sensory and motor functions.
What is the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS)? It controls involuntary actions such as heart rate, digestion, and glandular activity.
What is the primary function of the endocrine system? It secretes hormones that regulate growth, metabolism, reproduction, and homeostasis.
What is the job of the cardiovascular system? To transport blood, deliver oxygen/nutrients, and remove waste products.
What is the function of lymph nodes? They filter lymph, remove pathogens, and house immune cells.
What is the main structure responsible for gas exchange in the lungs? The alveoli, where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves.
How do the respiratory and circulatory systems work together? Respiratory system oxygenates blood; circulatory system transports it and returns CO₂ to lungs.
