Sci Unit 1: Matter

Matter

TermDefinition
Matter anything that has mass and volume
Mass the amount of matter inside and object
Volume how much space the object takes up
Law of Conservation of Matter Matter cannot be created or destroyed, only changed in states.
Particles Tiny building blocks of matter, also called atoms.
Weight How hard gravity pulls on an object
Solid fixed shape, volume, molecules are tightly packed and vibrate in place
Liquid takes the shape of its containers, fixed volume, molecules are loosely packed
Gas Fills up the container, no fixed volume, molecules go in all directions
Physical Change changes a substance's physical properties like shape, size, or state of matter
Chemical change a process where the substance transforms into a new substance through a chemical reaction
