| endomysium | delicate connective tissue membrane covering the skeletal muscle fibers in a skeletal muscle organ |
| epimysium | coarse sheet of connective tissue that covers a muscle as a whole |
| autonomic nervous system (ANS) | division of the nervous system that monitors and regulates subconscious (involuntary) functions |
| enteric nervous system (ENS) | complex arrangement of neurons that are interconnected with the central nervous system and with various divisions of the autonomic nervous system; |
| microglia | type of small neuroglial cell of nerve tissue that serves an immune system function by becoming an active phagocyte when stimulated |
| myelin | lipoprotein substance in the myelin sheath around many nerve fibers that contributes to high-speed conductivity of impulses |
| neuroglia | non-excitable supporting cells of nervous tissue; more properly called glia |
| cerebrum | largest and upper-most part of the human brain that controls consciousness, memory, sensations, emotions, and voluntary movements |
| ganglion | n peripheral nerves, a region of gray matter made up of unmyelinated fibers |
| olfactory nerve | cranial nerve I; sensory nerve; responsible for the sense of smell |
| autocrine hormone | a type of hormone that regulates activity in the secreting cell itself |
| peptide hormone | major category of nonsteroid hormones; smaller than protein hormones; made up of a short chain of amino acids; for example, antidiuretic hormone |
| aldosterone | hormone that stimulates the kidney to retain sodium, ions, and water |
| epinephrine | adrenaline; neurotransmitter related to nor-epinephrine; neurohormone secreted by the adrenal medulla |
| erythropoietin | glycoprotein secreted to increase red blood cell production in response to oxygen deficiency |
| diastole | relaxation of the heart (especially the ventricles), during which it fills with blood |
| thymus | endocrine gland located in the mediastinum; vital part of the body’s immune system |
| diapedesis | passage of any formed elements within blood through the vessel wall, as in movement of white cells into an area of injury and infection |
| vestibule | cavity in or behind an entry or opening |
