| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Epicardium | Outer layer of the heart wall (visceral later of the serous pericardium) |
| Exteroceptors | detect pressure, touch, pain, and temperature. Located on or very near the body surface and respond to stimuli that arise external to the body |
| Mechanoreceptors | stimuli that change the position of the receptor, resulting in the generation of a receptor potential |
| Chemoreceptors | activated by either the amount or the changing concentration of certain chemicals. Senses of taste and smell depend on chemoreceptors |
| Memory cell | a B cell or T cell that is actively producing an immune response, such as secreting antibodies (B-Cells) or directly attacking other cells (T Cells) |
| Lymphotoxin | powerful poison that acts more directly, quickly killing any cell it attacks |
| Myasthenia Gravis | Muscular disorder characterized by progressive weakness and chronic fatigue |
| Primary Bronchi | the trachea divides at its lower ends into the right bronchus being slightly larger and more vertical than the left *this fact helps explain why aspirated foreign objects often lodge in the right bronchus* |
| How many lobes do the right and left lungs have? | The right lung us divided into three lobes (superior, middle, and inferior). The left lung is partially divided into two lobes (superior and inferior) |
| Visceral pleura | covers the outer surfaces of the lungs and adheres to them much as the skin of an apple adheres to the apple. |
| Peripheral resistance | resistance to blood flow imposed by the force of friction between blood and the walls of its vessels |
| Specific immunity | Recognize specific threatening agents and then adapt, or respond, by targeting their activity against these agents |
