Earth Science Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Lithosphere | Rigid, rocky shell of Earth. Composed of the crust and the upper portion of the mantle. |
| Asthenosphere | Plastic, partially molten layer of Earth's mantle. Lithosphere and tectonic plates float on this. |
| Mid Ocean Ridge | Divergent plate boundaries found on this deep ocean floor where two tectonic plates are pulled apart and new crust forms. |
| Relative Dating | A method used to determine the chronological order of layers of rocks or geological events. Does not determine actual age. |
| Radiometric Dating | Method used to determine the numerical age of a rock or mineral. Based on its decay or radioactive isotopes. |
| Isotope | Multiple forms of an element where each form gas the same amount of protons, but a different number of neutrons. |
| Decay | Breakdown of atomic nuclei into more stable light elements. Released radiation. |
| Half Life | Time required for half of an object's unstable;e atoms to decay. |
| Latitude | The angular distant North and South of a location is on Earth from the Equator. Expressed in degrees and minutes. |
| Longitude | The angular distance East and West a location is on Earth from the Prime Meridian. Expressed in degrees and minutes. |
| time Zone | An area on Earth with a uniform agreed upon time. Measured by every 15 degrees longitude. from the Prime Meridian. |
| Outgassing | The release of trapped glasses from the center of the Earth through volcanic activity. Gave the Earth its atmosphere. |
| Solar Wind | Stream of fast moving charged protons and electrons emitted from the Sun's Corona. |
| Cyanobacteria | Blue/Green algae that produced much of the atmosphere's oxygen content. Caused the "Great Oxidation Event" |
| Ozone | Molecule composed of three oxygen bonded together. Beneficial to human life in atmosphere but poisonous if inhaled |
| Troposphere | Lowest layer of the atmosphere. Where almost all water vapor is found. Weather occurs in this layer |
| Stratosphere | Second lowest level of atmosphere. The Ozone layer is located here. Very little water vapor, airplanes fly here |
| Inflection point | Point of a curve where a change in direction occurs. A turning point in a data set. |
| Atmospheric pause | Boundary between two layers of the atmosphere. Named after the lower of two layers the boundary is between. Ex: Tropopause, stratopause etc. |
