What is a cell? The basic unit of all forms of life
What is the cell membrane? Thin, flexible, barrier that surrounds all cells; regulates what leaves and enters the cell
What is the nucleus? In cells, the structure that contains the cells genetic material in the form of DNA
What is a eukaryote? Organism whose cells contain a nucleus
What is a prokaryote? Unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus
How were microscopes invented on a basic level? 1500's eye glass makers discovered multiple glasses lenses could magnify small objects
What allowed cells to be discovered? A microscope
What did Robert Hooke do and when? Robert Hooke used an early microscope to view cork. This lead to the discovery of cells. Cells is still the name today after he believed what he saw looked similar to monastery rooms. He did this in 1665.
What does cell theory state? 1. All living things are made of cells. 2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. 3. New cells are made from existing ones
What did Matthias Schleiden do? When? Concluded all plants are made of cells in 1838
What did Theodor Schwann do? When? Stated all animals are made of cells in 1839
What did Rudolf Virchow do? When? Published the idea that new cells are only produced by the division of existing cells in 1855
