What is flooding? Exposes patient to a large amount of an undesirable stimulus in an effort to extinguish the anxiety response.
What is thought stopping Saying stop out loud when the thought comes to mind, or snap a rubber band on the wrist.
What is CBT? Based on the premise that people with these disorders overestimate the danger of situations and underestimate their own ability to handle them
What are obsessions Thoughts, impulses, or images that persist and recur so that they cannot be dismissed from the mind
What are compulsions Ritualistic behaviors on individual feels driven to perform in an attempt to reduce anxiety.
DSM criteria for OCD Obsessions, compulsions, or both. Not due to a substance or a condition, not explained by another psychiatric disorder, and takes 1 hour per day.
What are OCD disorders? OCD, body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding disorder, trichotillomania, excoriation
What are the risk factors for OCD? Child trauma, post infectious autoimmune syndrome first degree relatives, and comorbid with anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and or tic disorders
Should you allow compulsive behavior? Early in therapy, allow compulsive behavior because suddenly stopping rituals can increase anxiety
What drugs can be used for OCD? Clomipramine(TCA), SSRIs, and venlafaxine(SNRI)
What are the two hardmaxx treatments for OCD? Gamma knife, And deep brain stimulation
