QuestionAnswer
What is an ecosystem? Interaction of a community of living organisms (biotic) with non-living (abiotic) parts of the environment.
What are the three levels of organisation in an ecosystem? 1. Individual organisms 2. Population - group of one species in an area 3. Community - multiple populations of different species in one area.
What do plants in a community / habitat often compete for? Light, space and water / mineral ions from soil.
What do animals in a community / habitat often compete for? Food, mates and territory.
What is the importance of competition in a community? Enables species to evolve by natural selection.
What is interdependence? *Each species depends on other species for food, shelter, pollination, seed dispersal, etc. *If one species is removed it can affect the whole community.
What is the importance of interdependence? Enables an ecosystem to resist change.
What is a stable community? Where all the species and environmental factors are in balance so population sizes remain fairly constant.
