QuestionAnswer
Elements simplest pure substance
Compounds/molecules Two or more chemically combined elements
Mixtures Two or more elements NOT chemically combined and can be seperated
Atom Smallest particle of an element
Protons Sub atomic atom with a positive charge found in the nucleus of an atom
Neutrons Neutral charged sub-atomic atom found in the neucleus of an atom
Electrons a subatomic particle with a negative electric charge that orbits the nucleus of an atom
Lewis dot structures a visual representation of the valence electrons in a molecule, using dots to show electrons around the atomic symbols
chemical symbol Chemical symbols are used to represent the elements.
Atomic number The atomic number is the number of protons in an atom's nucleus
period a horizontal row on the periodic table where all elements have the same number of electron shells
group/family terms used to describe collections of elements or organisms with similar characteristics
noble gasses a group of chemical elements (helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon) in the periodic table that are colorless, odorless, and have very low reactivity
halogens any of the elements fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine, occupying group 17 of the periodic table. They are reactive nonmetallic elements that form strongly acidic compounds with hydrogen from which simple salts can be made
Akali metals a group of highly reactive chemical elements in Group 1 of the periodic table. They are soft, silvery metals with low melting points that are known for their tendency to lose one electron from their outer shell, which makes them highly reactive
ions An ion is an atom or group of atoms that has a net positive or negative electrical charge due to a loss or gain of electrons.
ionic bonds An ionic bond is a chemical bond formed by the electrostatic attraction between two oppositely charged ions,
covalent bonds Covalent bonding is a chemical bond formed by the sharing of electron pairs between atoms.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
