What effect does sympathetic stimulation have on cardiac output? It increases heart rate and contractility which raises cardiac output
Why is the SA node the heart’s pacemaker? It has the highest rate of spontaneous depolarization
Why is iron essential for RBC function ? It binds oxygen within hemoglobin
What is the main role of the lymphatic system? To return excess interstitial fluids to the blood stream and support immunity
What differentiates adaptive immunity from innate immunity? Adaptive immunity is specific and has memory. Innate immunity is fast and nonspecific
What is negative feedback in endocrine control? A rise in a hormone’s effect suppresses further hormone release
How does ADH help maintain fluid balance? It increases water reabsorption in the kidneys, reducing urine output
What creates the pressure gradient needed for inhalation? Diaphragm contraction increases thoracic volume and decreases
How is most CO2 transported in the body? Bicarbonate ions in the plasma
What happen to gas exchange when alveoli lose surface area? Diffusion efficiency decrease, causing impaired oxygenation
Why’s is bile important for fat digestion? It emulsifies fats increasing surface area for enzyme
What stimulates release of gastric juices ? Parasympathetic activation, stomach distention and presence of protein
