Vocabulary

TermDefinition
elements the basic building blocks of matter, consisting of a single type of atom that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
compounds a substance formed when two or more different chemical elements are chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio
mixtures a physical combination of two or more substances that are not chemically bonded
molecules a group of two or more atoms bonded together, representing the smallest particle of a substance that retains its chemical identity
atoms the basic building blocks of all matter, consisting of a central nucleus containing positively charged protons and neutral neutrons, surrounded by negatively charged electrons
protons positively charged particles found in the nucleus
electrons negatively charged particles found around the nucleus
neutrons particles with no electric charge, found in the nucleus of an atom alongside protons
Lewis Dot Structures diagrams that represent the valence electrons of atoms and the covalent bonds between them in a molecule
chemical symbols they are used to represent a symbol
atomic numbers the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which uniquely identifies a chemical element
periods periods are the horizontal rows in the periodic table
groups the vertical columns of elements, numbered 1 to 18, where atoms share the same number of valence electrons, leading to similar chemical and physical properties
noble gases nonmetallic, nonreactive elements found in the rightmost column (Group 18) of the periodic table, including helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon
halogens a group of seven highly reactive nonmetallic elements found in Group 17 of the periodic table
alkali metals a group of six highly reactive, soft, silvery-white metals in Group 1 of the periodic table: lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), and francium (Fr)
ions atoms or groups of atoms that have a net electrical charge, either positive or negative
ionic bonds the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions, which forms when one atom transfers electrons to another
covalent bonds a chemical bond that involves the sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two atoms

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
