| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) | An organism whose genes have been directly manipulated by scientist by inserterting 1 or more genes. |
| Genetic Engineering | Genetic control that inserts a trait from one species into another to give the target a new trait that improves it in some way. |
| Asexual Reproduction | Reproduction of genetically identical offspring from a single parent through mitosis. |
| Mitosis | Series of events when duplicated chromosomes of parent cell are seperated into 2 identical sets, creating identical daughter cells after cell division. |
| Cell Cycle | Sequence of phases where the cell preps for/undergoes cell division |
| Sexual Reproduction | Reproduction of 2 parents to offspring in meiosis. |
| Alleles | An organism that has 2 copies of gene for each of it's traits. |
| Dominant | Trait that'll mask another version of the trait. |
| Recessive | The trait that hidden by the dominant trait. |
| Phenotype | The traits physical characteristics |
| Genotype | Genetic makeup of an organism |
| Gene | Segment of an organisms DNA. |
| Homozygous | Genotypes that have 2 identical alleles |
| Heterozygous | Genotypes that have 2 different alleles |
| Gamete | Sexual reproductive cell |
| Pedigree | Diagram similar to family tree that shows generations, relationships, and traits. |
| Sex-linked trait | An allele for a trait that is carried on one of the sex chromosomes. |
| Meiosis | Process of cell division that produces gametes |
| Haploid | One set of chromosomes, 23, gamete, (n) |
| Diploid | 2 sets of chromosomes, 46, somatic, (2n) |
| Replication | Copying DNA, occurs in nucleus |
| Transcription | Copying Dna into a strand of messenger mRNA. |
| Translation | To make proteins mRNA turns to amino acids which turns to proteins at the ribosome. |
