TermDefinition
Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) An organism whose genes have been directly manipulated by scientist by inserterting 1 or more genes.
Genetic Engineering Genetic control that inserts a trait from one species into another to give the target a new trait that improves it in some way.
Asexual Reproduction Reproduction of genetically identical offspring from a single parent through mitosis.
Mitosis Series of events when duplicated chromosomes of parent cell are seperated into 2 identical sets, creating identical daughter cells after cell division.
Cell Cycle Sequence of phases where the cell preps for/undergoes cell division
Sexual Reproduction Reproduction of 2 parents to offspring in meiosis.
Alleles An organism that has 2 copies of gene for each of it's traits.
Dominant Trait that'll mask another version of the trait.
Recessive The trait that hidden by the dominant trait.
Phenotype The traits physical characteristics
Genotype Genetic makeup of an organism
Gene Segment of an organisms DNA.
Homozygous Genotypes that have 2 identical alleles
Heterozygous Genotypes that have 2 different alleles
Gamete Sexual reproductive cell
Pedigree Diagram similar to family tree that shows generations, relationships, and traits.
Sex-linked trait An allele for a trait that is carried on one of the sex chromosomes.
Meiosis Process of cell division that produces gametes
Haploid One set of chromosomes, 23, gamete, (n)
Diploid 2 sets of chromosomes, 46, somatic, (2n)
Replication Copying DNA, occurs in nucleus
Transcription Copying Dna into a strand of messenger mRNA.
Translation To make proteins mRNA turns to amino acids which turns to proteins at the ribosome.
