| Term | Definition |

| Needle | a specialized needle for use in a sewing machine. |
| Bobbin | A small, flat spool that holds the bottom thread. |
| Bobbin Case | Holds the bobbin and is found beneath the throat plate |
| Bobbin Compartment | will hold the bobbin snugly in place, which will allow the machine to neatly unravel it. |
| Presser Foot | Holds the fabric firmly in place against the feed dogs for sewing |
| Presser-bar lifter/Presser foot lifter | Raises and lowers the presser foot |
| Feed Dog | Feed Dog |
| Throat Plate | Contains seam allowance markings for accurate sewing |
| Stitch Selection Panel/ Stitch Pattern Control | Can be adjusted to make different decorative stitching patterns |
| Thread take up lever | Feeds thread from the spool to the needle. |
| Thread Guide | Holds the upper thread in place as it moves through the machine |
| Spool Thread | a cylindrical container that holds the thread used in sewing machines. |
| Spool Pin | Holds the spool of thread |
| Bobbin Winder Spindle/Bobbin Winder | Hold the bobbin thread while thread is wound from the spool to the bobbin |
| Balance Wheel/ Handwheel | Controls the up-and-down movement of the needle and thread take up lever |
| Stitch width regulator/control | Adjust the width of stitches when using zigzag or decorative stitches |
| Tension Control | the amount of thread that can pass through the machine to create the stitch. |
| Stitch length control/regulator | Used to adjust stitches from short to long |
| Reverse level/button | Allows you to stitch backwards to secure the end of the seam |
| Foot pedal | control the speed of your sewing machine, serger, cover stitch machine, etc. |
