Civil Rights Act of 1866 the oldest federal legislation affecting staffing; based on the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; Amended in 1972 illegal for an employer to discriminate in hiring, firing, promoting, compensating, or in terms, conditions or privileges of employment based on race, color, sex, religion or national origin
Equal Pay Act of 1963; Amended in 1972 prohibits an employer from paying women less money than men if both employees to work that is substantially the same
Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 act gives the worker a fresh 180 days period to file a charge of discrimination with the EEOC
Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 prohibits discrimination in employment based on pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions; also limiting job advancement may be a violation of the act
Civil Rights Act of 1991 Amended 5 statutes; a complaining party may recover punitive damages if the complaining party demonstrates that the company engaged in discriminatory practice with malice or reckless indifference to the law
Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (Amended 1978, 1986, 1990) prohibited employers from discriminating against individual who were 40-65 years old; provides for a trial by jury
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination against disabled workers who are employed by certain government contractors and organization that received federal grants more than $2500
Vietnam Era Veteran's Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974 requires covered federal government contractors to take affirmative action to employ and advance in employment specified catagories of veterans protected by the act; requires contractors to list their employment opening and give covered vets priority
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilties
Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 provides more protection making more people eligible
Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 makes it illegal for certain employers to fire or refuse to hire a person based on that person's national origin or citizenship.
Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 provides protection to Reserve and National Guard members; allows them to return to employment after completing their service
Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 protects from discrimination based on genetic information by making unlawful the misuse of genetic information to discrimination in health insurance and employment
