What is the significance of the term ‘fourth trimester’ in human birth The period immediately after birth, highlighting, the unique challenges and adaptations of human newborns.
What is the obstetric dilemma in human evolution? The conflict between evolving a larger brain sizes and the need for a narrow pelvis due to bipedalism (walking up right)
How have humans adapted to the challenges of birth? having shorter gustation periods, which allows for brain development outside the womb.
What role does culture play in human childbirth? providing social support, traditional practices, and midwifery knowledge that has evolved overtime.
What are the stages of labor? The Uterine contractions (help open the cervix) the dilation of the cervix (delivery of the baby) the expulsion of placenta.
What hormonal changes occurred during labour Oxytocin is released to initiate contractions. Endorphins act as neutral painkillers cortisol from the baby may signal the onset of labor.
What psychological changes occur in the baby during birth? Baby passes through the birth canal. It’s head moulded to fit through compression during birth, expels amniotic fluid from the lungs preparing Baby for their first breath.
What is the golden hour after birth? First hour after birth during which the newborn is particularly alert and instinctively seeks connection with the parents
What is colostrum and its importance? First milk produced by the mother post birth, Rich in antibodies that help to baby’s immune system.
How does breast-feeding support parent infant bonding? Trigger the rare release of oxytocin, enhancing emotional bonding between the parent and the baby.
What is the difference between bonding and attachment? Bonding refers to the parents, emotional connection to the infant while attachment describes the infant behavioural inclination to seek proximity to the caregiver
What psychological changes occur in caregivers during the postpartum period? Increased oxytocin and prolactin leading to enhance sensitivity and responsiveness to the babies needs.
