Epidermis Outer epithelial layer of the skin
Dermis The thick layer of the skin beneath the epidermis
Subcutaneous layer Layer beneath the skin.
Keratinization The process by which cells form fibrils of keratin and harden.
Melanocyte Melanin producing cell.
Melanin Dark pigment found in skin and hair.
Holocrine glands A gland whose secretion contains entire secretory cells.
Sebum Oily secretion of the sebaceous glands.
Sudoriferous glands Gland that secretes an oily substance.
Eccrine glands Sweat gland that maintains body temperature.
Apocrine glands A type of gland whose secretions contain parts of secretory cells.
Radiation A form of energy that includes visible light, ultraviolet light, and X rays; the means by which body heat is lost in the form of infrared
Conduction Movement of body heat into the molecules of cooler objects in contact with the body surface.
Convection The transmission of heat from one substance to another through the circulation of heated air particles.
Evaporation Changing a liquid into a gas.
Negative feedback A mechanism in which build up of a product causes suppression of its synthesis, also a component of physiological systems.
Hypothermia Lowered body temperature
Hyperthermia Raised body temperature
Albinism Condition characterized by a lack of pigment.
Cyanosis Bluish skin coloration due to decreased blood oxygen concentration.
Jaundice Liver malfunction.
Inflammation A tissue response to stress that is characterized by dilation of blood vessels and fluid accumulation in the affected region.
Autograft Tissue or organ transplanted from one part of an individual’s body to another.
Homograft Tissue or organ transplanted from a donor.
