1.) Clearing Intersections When approaching intersections, scan your surroundings so that you know what's going on around you. Look left right left when you're turning and check your side mirrors to see what's around you.
2.) When stopped in traffic When stopped, leave one truck length between you so that you have more room to maneuver if needed
3.) Count 1-2-3 after vehicle ahead has started to move count to 3 before you start moving
4.) 4 to 6sec following for speeds up to 30mph, 6-8sec for speeds over 30mph you need more stopping distance for faster speeds
5.) 8-12sec eye-lead time Eye-lead time is how many seconds it takes you to reach a stationary object in front of you
6.) Scan steering wheels Scan steering wheels in parked vehicles to see if they are occupied. If someone was in them, they could pull out and be a possible hazard.
7.) Stale green lights You won’t know when it will turn yellow. The decision to stop or go is the white stop line.
8.) Eye contact Establish eye contact if the person does not see you, do a light tap on the horn to see if they are there
9.) Pulling from curb When pulling from curbs, use your traffic signal and check both of your mirrors to make sure its clear
10.) Use of mirrors and gages check mirrors and gages every 5-8sec, then check back to front of the vehicle
