what is the difference between a calorie (c) and a Calorie (C)? 1 Calorie (food Calorie) = 1,000 calories

what does the calorimeter measure? heat when food burns, transferred into water
what does triangle T mean? change in water temp
how do you find the mass of food burned? mass before burning- mass after burning
how do you calculate Calories per gram? Calories released divided by grams of food burned
why cant you relight a food if the flame goes out? because the water is already warmer
why must the soot be cleaned off the flask before each run? soot blocks heat transfer
what is a functional group? reactive group of atoms that give molecule its behavior
what functional group do alkanes have? none
what functional group do alkenes have? double bond (vinyl group)
what functional group do alcohols have? an OH (hydroxyl group)
what functional group do ketones have? a carbonyl group
what region is the OH stretch found in? around 3500 cm-1
what region is the vinyl C-H stretch found in? just above 3000 cm-1
what region is the carbonyl (C=O) stretch found in? approximately 1700 cm-1
what is the fingerprint region? 1500-500 cm-1
if you see a strong peak at 3500 cm-1 what is the compound likely to be? an alcohol
if no OH and C=O peaks are present, but you only see saturated CHs, what class is likely? an alkane
what does the IR spectrometer measure? which frequencies of IR light are absorbed by the molecule
what does the peak in an IR spectrum mean? molecule absorbed IR, a vibration occured
what does transmittance mean on an IR spectrum? how much IR passes through the sample
