ChemicalNomenclature

Chemical Naming Vocab

TermDefinition
Acid A molecular compound that produces H+ ions when dissolved in water.
Anion A negatively charged ion formed when an atom gains one or more electrons; named by dropping the element's ending and adding the -ide suffix.
Base An ionic compound that produces OH− ions (the hydroxide ion) when dissolved in water.
Binary Acid An acid composed of hydrogen and one other element (e.g., HCl).
Binary Compound A compound that is composed of only two different elements.
Cation A positively charged ion formed when an atom loses one or more electrons; named the same as the parent element.
Chemical Formula A symbolic representation of a compound that shows the kinds and numbers of atoms present in a molecule.
Chemical Nomenclature The systematic set of rules used for naming chemical compounds.
Crisscross Method An alternative technique for writing an ionic compound's formula where the numerical value of each ion's charge is exchanged to become the subscript of the other ion.
Divalent A term describing a cation that has a 2+ charge, meaning it has lost two electrons (e.g., Mg2+).
Empirical Formula A chemical formula that shows the elements in a compound in their simplest, lowest whole-number ratio.
Ionic Compound A compound formed by the electrostatic attraction between a cation and an anion; the overall structure must be electrically neutral.
Ion An atom or group of atoms that has an electrical charge due to the gain or loss of electrons.
Molecular Formula A chemical formula that shows the actual kinds and exact number of atoms of each element in a molecule of a compound.
Monovalent A term describing a cation that has a 1+ charge, meaning it has lost one electron (e.g., K+).
Oxoacid An acid that contains hydrogen, oxygen, and one other element (e.g., H2SO4).
Polyatomic Ion An ion that is composed of two or more atoms that are tightly bonded together and behave as a single, charged unit.
Stock System The naming convention that uses Roman numerals in parentheses to indicate the positive charge on a transition metal cation in an ionic compound.
Subscript A number written after a chemical symbol in a formula to indicate the number of atoms of that element in the molecule.
Ternary Ionic Compound An ionic compound that contains three different elements, typically involving a monatomic ion and a polyatomic ion.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
