Digestion

Gastrointestinal Tract (GI) The digestive system as a whole
Oral cavity The mouth where the food enters and chewing begins
Pharynx the throat the passageway for the food to move from the mouth to the esophagus
Epiglottis a flap that prevents food from entering the windpipe
Stomach a tube that moves food from the throat to the stomach
Small Intestine A long tube where most nutrients are absorbed
Duodenum first part o the small intestine that receives digestive juices from the live and pancreas
Jejunum the middle part of the small intestine and absorbs most nutrients
Ileum the last part of the small intestine and absorbs all remaining nutrients
Lower GI includes the large intestine, rectum, and anus
Cecum First part of the large intestine connects the small and large intestine
Large Intestine Absorbs water from waste
Ascending Colon travels upward on the right side of the large intestine
Descending Colon runs across the abdomen a part of the large intestine
Sigmoid Colon travels down the left side of the large intestine
Rectum s shaped last part before the rectum in the large intestine
Anus stores feces until ready to leave the body
Accessory Organs opening through which feces exits
Salivary Glands makes saliva to help chew and digest food
Teeth chomps down to break food into smaller pieces
Tongue Helps move food and tastes it
Uvula small flap in the back of the throat helps with swallowing
Liver Makes bile to digest fats
Pancreas Produces digestive enzymes and hormones like insulin
Appendix small pouch role in digestive system is minor
Sphincters muscles that act like valves, opening and closing to control the flow of food or waste
Upper Esophageal controls food entry into the esophagus
Lower Esophageal prevents stomach acid from coming up into the esophagus
Pyloric controls food leaving the stomach into the small intestine
