Volcano Vocab

Volcanoe

volcano An opening in the Earth’s crust through which magma, gases, and ash escape.
magma Molten rock beneath the Earth’s surface.
lava Magma that has reached the Earth’s surface.
crater A bowl-shaped depression at the top of a volcano surrounding the main vent.
vent The opening through which magma, ash, and gases leave the volcano.
magma chamber A pocket of molten rock located beneath a volcano.
Pyroclastic Flow A fast-moving cloud of hot gas, ash, and rock that rushes down a volcano during explosive eruptions.
ash cloud A cloud of tiny rock and glass particles thrown into the atmosphere during an eruption
subduction zone An area where one tectonic plate slides beneath another, often forming volcanoes.
hot spot A place where magma rises from deep within the mantle, forming volcanoes away from plate boundaries.
Composite Volcano (Stratovolcano) A tall, cone-shaped volcano made of alternating layers of lava, ash, and rock; known for explosive eruptions.
Cinder Cone Volcano A small, steep-sided volcano made from ash, cinders, and rock fragments.
Basaltic Lava Hot, thin, and fast-flowing lava that forms shield volcanoes.
Rhyolitic Lava Thick, sticky lava that traps gases, often causing explosive eruptions
convergent boundary A place where two tectonic plates move toward each other, often creating mountains and volcanoes and trenches in the ocean floor
divergent boundaries A place where tectonic plates move apart and magma rises to form new crust.
Pacific Ring of Fire A horseshoe-shaped area around the Pacific Ocean known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Eruption The release of magma, gases, and ash from a volcano.
Lahar A destructive mudflow formed when volcanic ash mixes with water or melted snow.
