atomic number the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
average atomic mass weighted average of the atomic masses for the isotopes of an element
group Vertical column in the periodic table
ion An atom or group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge.
isotope notation common notation used to indicate the atomic number and mass number of an isotope
isotope Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons
mass number the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
period Horizontal rows on the periodic table
valence electron the number of electrons in the outermost energy level of the atom
