| ponder | think about something carefully, especially before making a decision or reaching a conclusion. |
| surreptitious | kept secret, especially because it would not be approved of; secretive and sneaky |
| accustomed | customary; usual |
| cantankerous | bad-tempered; argumentative; uncooperative |
| placate | to make less angry or hostile |
| anxious | experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness, typically about an upcoming event or something with an uncertain outcome. |
| calamitous | having extremely unfortunate or disastrous consequences |
| striving | to make great efforts to achieve or obtain something |
| persist | to continue to exist past the usual time, or to continue to do something in a determined way even when facing difficulties or opposition |
| bemoan | to express deep grief or distress over; to complain about |
| conspiracy | a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful |
| cryptic | having a hidden or mysterious meaning |
