What is the function of the red marrow? Hematopoiesis-blood creation
What is the function of the yellow marrow? Fat and mineral storage
What minerals are stored in the bone? Calcium and phosphate
Which mineral provides the hardness for the bone? Calcium
What are the functions of these bones: Long: Support weight Flat: Protection Irregular: Protects organs
What is the difference between the axial and appendicular skeleton (what major bones are included in each? Axial: Main skeleton (ribs, sternum, skull, mandible, vertebrae) Appendicular: Humerus, Ulna, Radius, Femur, Tibia, Fibula
What is the importance of epiphysis? Has cartilage padding to protect the ends of the bones to prevent friction breaks
What is the importance of diaphysis? Contains spongy bone to create blood
What structure indicates if the bone is continuing to grow or has ceased to grow? Determine the size of the epiphyseal growth plate
What is the function of the periosteum? Provides blood and nutrients to the bone
What is the difference between osteoblasts and osteoclasts? Osteoblasts build bone while osteoclasts consume bone
