Chapter 5 diseases and conditions

TermDefinition
Adhesion scar tissue that can develop in muscle post injury abnormally binds muscle fibers or muscles together, looks like a scar, doesn't go away, can create pain if nerve is affected, affects muscle functionality (no bueno for athletes) contract/stretching = BYE
Ataxia without coordination/lack of balance (proprioception - brain body connection)
Atrophy degeneration of muscle, you don't use it, you lose it, (why wheelchair ppl's legs are skinny :(, can happen post immobilization)
Carpal tunnel syndrome pinching of the median nerve through the carpal tunnel (caused by swelling and over use)
Contracture permanent tightening of flexor muscles via atrophy, common in DND (duchenne's) and paralyzed patients, ex. car accident, muscle can be moved manually but it snaps back (looks all bent)
Dystaxia bad coordination/difficulty, problem with nerve communication with muscle groups (proprioception is affected when someone is injured, needs to be replenished by a PT)
Fasciitis inflammation of the fascia (thin membrane that covers/surrounds/protects muscles)
Hemiparesis half of body slightly paralyzed, weak, caused by stroke
Hemiplegia half the body completely paralyzed, caused by stroke
Impingement syndrome tendonitis (pinches when it happens, painful) in shoulder due to OA and overuse
Muscular dystrophy (DMD) (duchenne's) genetic condition where muscles pathologically atrophy, symptoms develop ages 2-4 (usually boys), rapidly progresses until death at 18-25, identified by Gowers maneuver , detected via blood, treatment - maintaining daily activities (OT)
Plantar fasciitis pain in the sole of foot due to falling arch & excessive stretching/flattening of plantar fascia (common w/ runners) , can cause a heel spur (bone growth, painful), need arch support (orthotics)
Quadriplegia four extremities paralyzed (paraplegia -paralysed from waist down)
Sarcopenia muscle atrophy in elderly population (why grandma is "squishy")
Spasm tightening of a muscle or potion of a muscle abnormally (treatment- massaging, yoga)
Strain muscle or tendon tear graded 1-3 (1. 1-49% torn, 2. 50-99% torn, 3. completely torn), difference in healing times and prognosis, treatment is PT and RICE, muscle "belly" prognosis (2-4 weeks) is more favorable than a tendon, (6-8 weeks)
Tremor shaking of muscle abnormally, random/uncontrollable, mumbly speech (parkinson's disease - problem in brain)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
