| Ecology | Study of interactions between organisms and their environment. |
| Organism | A single living thing. |
| Population | A group of the same species living in the same area. |
| Community | All the different populations living in an area. |
| Ecosystem | All organisms and nonliving factors in an environment. |
| Biome | Large geographic area with similar climate and organisms. |
| Biosphere | All life and environments on Earth. |
| Geochemical Cycles | Movement of elements like carbon, nitrogen, water through Earth. |
| Nitrogen Cycle | Process that converts nitrogen into usable forms for organisms. |
| Exponential Growth | Population growth without limits; J-shaped curve. |
| Logistic growth | Population growth with limits; S-shaped curve. |
| Population Density | Number of individuals per unit area. |
| Carrying Capacity | Largest population an environment can support. |
| Density-dependent limiting factor | Factors that increase with population size (competition, disease). |
| Density-independent limiting factor | Affect all populations equally (floods, fires). |
| Abiotic | Nonliving components of an ecosystem. |
| Biotic | Living components of an ecosystem. |
| Immigration | Movement of individuals into a population. |
| Emigration | Movement of individuals out of a population. |
| Stable Ecosystem | Ecosystem with balanced populations and conditions. |
| Sustainability | Using resources so they last long term. |
| Ecological (Carbon) Footprint | Amount of resources a person or population uses. |
| Greenhouse Effect | Warming caused by gases trapping heat in atmosphere. |
| Primary Succession | Succession starting on bare rock, no soil. |
| Secondary Succession | Succession after disturbance where soil remains. |
| Pioneer Species | First species to colonize an area. |
| Niche | Role or job of an organism in its environment. |
| Interspecific Competition | Competition between different species. |
| Intraspecific Competition | Competition within the same species. |
| Parasitism | Relationship where one benefits, one is harmed. |
| Mutualism | Relationship where both benefit. |
| Commensalism | Relationship where one benefits, other unaffected. |
| Symbiosis | Any close, long-term relationship between species. |
