Ecology Study of interactions between organisms and their environment.
Organism A single living thing.
Population A group of the same species living in the same area.
Community All the different populations living in an area.
Ecosystem All organisms and nonliving factors in an environment.
Biome Large geographic area with similar climate and organisms.
Biosphere All life and environments on Earth.
Geochemical Cycles Movement of elements like carbon, nitrogen, water through Earth.
Nitrogen Cycle Process that converts nitrogen into usable forms for organisms.
Exponential Growth Population growth without limits; J-shaped curve.
Logistic growth Population growth with limits; S-shaped curve.
Population Density Number of individuals per unit area.
Carrying Capacity Largest population an environment can support.
Density-dependent limiting factor Factors that increase with population size (competition, disease).
Density-independent limiting factor Affect all populations equally (floods, fires).
Abiotic Nonliving components of an ecosystem.
Biotic Living components of an ecosystem.
Immigration Movement of individuals into a population.
Emigration Movement of individuals out of a population.
Stable Ecosystem Ecosystem with balanced populations and conditions.
Sustainability Using resources so they last long term.
Ecological (Carbon) Footprint Amount of resources a person or population uses.
Greenhouse Effect Warming caused by gases trapping heat in atmosphere.
Primary Succession Succession starting on bare rock, no soil.
Secondary Succession Succession after disturbance where soil remains.
Pioneer Species First species to colonize an area.
Niche Role or job of an organism in its environment.
Interspecific Competition Competition between different species.
Intraspecific Competition Competition within the same species.
Parasitism Relationship where one benefits, one is harmed.
Mutualism Relationship where both benefit.
Commensalism Relationship where one benefits, other unaffected.
Symbiosis Any close, long-term relationship between species.
