QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 jobs of the nervous system? 1. Receive information about what is happening both inside and outside of your body 2. Direct the way in which your body responds to this information 3. Maintain homeostasis
A change in the environment that causes an organism to react is called a Stimulus
Give an example of each of the following types of stimuli: electromagnetic, mechanical, chemical electromagnetic - wavelengths of light mechanical - sound waves, pressure, heat, cold, movement, pain chemical - taste & scent molecules
Your body’s reaction to a stimulus is called a responce
Electrochemical signals are called impulses
neuron Nerve cells that carry information through your nervous system
nerve impulse The message that a neuron carries
What part of a neuron carries nerve impulses toward the cell body dendrites
correct route for an impulse in a reflex arc R SIM E- Receptor - Sensory - Inter- Motor - Effector
What part of a neuron carries nerve impulses away from the cell body? axon
Which type of neuron picks up stimuli from the environment? Sensory neuron
Which type of neuron carries nerve impulses from one neuron to another? Interneuron
Which type of neuron sends a nerve impulse to a muscle, causing the muscle to contract in response? motor neuron
What is a synapse? A gap between neurons in which a nerve impulse must travel over to get to the next neuron
What does the central nervous system consist of? brain n spinal cord
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of? Nerves (Somatic (voluntary) and autonomic (involuntary) NS)
The gap between the axon terminal or one neuron and the next structure Synapse
An organism’s ability to maintain homeostasis Regulation
What is the thick column of nerve tissue that links the brain to most of the nerves on the body? Spinal cord
What part of the brain controls involuntary actions? brain stem
What part of the brain controls coordination and balance? cerebellum
What part of the brain controls thinking, speaking and memory? Cerebrum
What are the two main types of memory? short n long term
How are these types of memory different from one another? Short term memory is where information is stored for about 30 seconds or less. Long term memory is formed through practice & repetition which strengthens neuron connections and allows information to be remembered for extended periods of time
Involuntary response that happens quickly reflex
Maintaining internal balance or equilibrium Homeostasis
In a reflex arc the impulse gets sent to the Spinal cord
Chemicals that carry an impulse across the synapse Neurotransmitter

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
