what does the red bone marrow do? forms blood cells - hematopoiesis stores inorganic materials - magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium
what does the yellow bone marrow do? storage of fat and nutritious elements
axial skeleton (middle) skull, neck, trunk, vertebral column, thoracic cage (12 ribs +sternum)
appendicular skeleton (outer) limbs - arms legs and hips
pectoral girdle (upper) arms, clavicle bone, scapula
pelvic girdle (lower) legs, coxal bones (hip)
flat bone function + examples (ex Halloween) protect - sternum ribs skull
long bone function + examples (lower) weight support- fibia, fibula, humerus, femur (legs)
short bone function + examples (small) stable movement - carpals, tarsals (wrist)
irregular bone function + examples protection of organs - pelvis, vertebrae
sesamoid bone function + examples reinforce tendons - patella (kneecap)
epiphysis - END end of the bone
diaphysis - LONG shaft of bone
articular cartilage padding to ends
periosteum - "around" membrane
medullary cavity - inner inside the diaphysis has bone marrow
endosteum- more inner lining of the medullary cavity
compact bone strong wall of diaphysis
spongy bone epiphysis located (red marrow)
epiphyseal line- upon line that marks end of bone growth (between epiphysis and diaphysis)
bone tissue is also called ... osseous tissue (collagen and salts) calcium and phosphate
calcium is found mainly --- in the face and bones
what is an osteon? basic units in a compact bone
what is the difference between osteoclasts and osteoblasts clast - consume bone blast- build osteocytes
what is heterotopic ossification? abnormal bone growth in non-skeletal regions (tissues)
more cartilage between bones means... the person is younger, still has bone to grow
how do bones form? process ... ossification means! hyaline cartilage into bone tissue , first center diameter increased, second center length increased
