Cells

TermDefinition
Cell The basic unit of structure in a living thing
Microscope An instrument that makes small objects look larger
Cell theory A wildly accepted explanation in the relationship between cells and living things
Cell wall A rigid supporting layer that surrounds the cell
Cell membrane A thin flexible layer that surrounds a cell
Nucleus a large oval that contains DNA
Organelle A type of cell structure that carries out a specific funcion
Ribosome A small grain shape Organnlle that makes protein
Cytoplasm The thick fluid region of a cell located inside the cell membrane
Mitochondria Rod shaped organelles that convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use
Endoplasmic Reticulm An Organnlle that makes a maze in which proteins are carried from one place to another
Golgi apparatus An Organelle in a cell that receives proteins
Vacuole A sac like Organelle that stores water and food
Chloroplast An Organelle in the cells of plants that captures energy from sunlight
Lysosome A cell Organelle which contains chemicals that break down food particals
Multicellular Consisting of many cells
Unicellular Made of a single cell
Tissue A group of similar cells that do the same funtion
Organ A body structure that is composed of different kinds of tissues that work togeather
Organ system A group of organs that work togeather to preform a major function
Element A pure substance that cannot be broken down by any chemicals
Compound A substance made of two or more elements chemically combined
Carbohydrate An energy rich organic compound such as sugar or starch that is made up of the elements oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen
Lipid An energy rich organic compound such as fat oil or wax that is made of oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen
Protein Large organic molecule made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and sometimes sulfur
Enzyme A type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living thing
Nucleic acid A very large organic molecule made of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and phospherus that carry the instructions that the cells need to carry out life
DNA the genetic material that caries infromation about an organism and passes down from parent to offspring
Double helix The shape of a DNA molecule
selectively prmiable A property of cell membrane that allows some substances to pass but others can't
passive transport The movement of dissolve materials across a cell membrane without celular energy
diffusion The process by which molecules move from a higher to a lower concentration
osmosos The diffusion of water molecules across a selectively periable membrane
active transport the movement of materials across a cell membrane using celular energy
endocytosis The process by which the cell membrane takes particle into the cells
exocytosis the process which the vacuole fuses with the cell membrane

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
