QuestionAnswer
Cell A basic unit of structure and function in living things
microscope An instrument that makes small objects look larger
cell theory A widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells and living things
cell wall A rigid supporting layer that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organismos
cell membrane a thin flexible barrier that surround a cell and controls which pass into and out of a cell
nucleus In cells a large oval organelle that contains the cell genetic material in the form of DNA and controls many of the cells activities
organelle A tiny cell structure that carriers out a specific function within the cell
ribosome A small grain shaped organelle in the cytoplasm of a cell that produces proteins
cytoplasm The thick fluid region a cell located inside of the cell membrane
mitochondria Rod shaped organelles that convert energy in food molecules the energy the cell can use to carry out its functions
endoplasmic reticulum An organelle that forms a maze of passage ways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another
Golgi apparaatus An organelle in a cell that receives protein and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic curriculum packages them and distributes them to other parts of the cell
vacuole A saclike organelle, that stores, water, food, and other materials
chlorplast Shin the cells of plants and some other organisms that capture energy from sunlight and changes it into any energy from the cells can use to make food
lysosome Hey, so organelle which contains chemicals that breakdown large food particles into smaller ones, and that can be used by the rest of the cells
multicellular Consisting of many cells
unicellurlar Made of a single cell
tissue A group of similar cells that perform a specific function
organ A body structure that is composed of different kinds of tissue that work together
organ system A group of organisms that work together, and perform major functions
element A pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means
compound A substance made of two or more elements, chemically combined with a specific ratio or production
carbohydrate And energy, rich organism, compounded, such as sugar or starch that made up of the elements, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
lipid And energy rich, organic compost, such as fat oil or wax that is made of carbon hydrogen and oxygen
protenin Large organic molecule that is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen nitrogen, and sometimes that sulfur
enzyme A biological catalyst that lowers the activation of energy or reactions in the cell
nucleic acid A very large organic molecule made up of carbon oxygen hydrogen nitrogen, and there’s a horse that contains the instructions cells need to carry out all the functions of life
DNA Distributed acid is that genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring
double helix The shape of a DNA molecule
selectively permeable A property of cell membrane that allows some substance to pass across it while others cannot
passive transport the movement of dissolved materials across a cell membrane without using cellular energy
diffusion The process by which molecules move from an area of lower concentration
osmosis The diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane
active transport The movement of materials across a cell membrane using cellular engery
endcytosis The prosses by witch the cell membrane takes particles into the cell by changing shape and engulfing the particles
exocytosis The process by which the vacuole surrounding particles fuses with cell membrane forcing the contents out of the cell

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
