Growth of the Colonies

TermDefinition
transatlantic slave trade Millions of African people were taken from their homes and families; one of the largest forced migrations in history
Slavery in the colonies African people were enslaved in ALL colonies
Southern region crops Farmers grew crops they could sell - tobacco, cotton, and rice
blacksmiths Created tools, horseshoes, and out of metal
merchants Often worked in cities so they could more easily sell goods to other colonies and countries
printmaking A variety of things were printed by printmakers such as newspapers, books, and pamphlets to spread news throughout the colonies
free women Allowed to be merchants, shopkeepers, and tavern keepers
apothecaries Made medicine so they could take care of sick patients
women in the colonies Making clothes, cooking, cleaning, spinning wool, and raising children were jobs performed by women in every colony
