Urbanization Vocab

TermDefinition
Urbanization The process of cities growing as more people move from rural to urban areas.
Urban Related to cities; areas with many people, buildings, and businesses.
Metropolitan Area A large city and its connected suburbs/towns, forming one economic/social region.
Population Density The number of people per unit of area (e.g., per square mile/kilometer).
Rural Countryside or areas with few people and lots of open land.
Suburban Residential areas on the edge of cities, usually less crowded than the city center.
Infrastructure Roads, water supply, electricity, schools, and other systems that support a community.
Housing Shortage When there aren’t enough homes for everyone, causing overcrowding or homelessness.
Green Space Parks, gardens, or natural areas in cities for recreation and cleaner air.
Urban Planning: The science of organizing how land is used in a city for homes, businesses, parks, and transportation.
Urban Sprawl: The spread of a city and its suburbs over more and more rural land.
Megacity: A city with a population of over 10 million people.
Informal Settlement: Areas where people build homes without government planning, often lacking basic services.
