what are pseudogenes? former genes that have acumulated mutations and are now nonfunctional
what is repetitive DNA? present in multiple copies in the genome
what is transposable elements? stretches of DNA that can move from one location to another within the genome
what are transposons? move by a cut and paste method or by a copy and paste method that leaves a copy behind
what is a retrotransposon? move by means of an RNA intermediate and always leave a copy behind
what are short tandem repeat (str)? series of repeating units of two to five nucleotides
what is genetic profile? unique set of genetic markers for each individual
what are multigene families? collections of identical or very similar genes
